What is Photobiomodulation?
Precision, not power, makes light therapeutic.
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the use of specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to influence cellular activity — without heat, without ultraviolet exposure, and without breaking the skin.
It's not a wellness trend built on novelty. It's a defined field of biomedical research, over five decades in development, now supported by systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials across recovery, pain, and skin health.
A Formal Definition
Photobiomodulation refers to the use of non-ionising light — from lasers, LEDs, or broadband sources — in the red and near-infrared spectrum, to produce a beneficial biological effect through non-thermal mechanisms. The term was formally adopted by international consensus in 2015, replacing the older label "low-level laser therapy," once it became clear that LED sources produce comparable effects to lasers at equivalent wavelength and dose.
The defining feature of PBM is that it works photochemically, not thermally. Surgical and aesthetic lasers work by heating tissue. PBM is delivered at doses specifically designed not to raise tissue temperature. Its effects come instead from the absorption of photons by specific molecules inside cells.
PBM vs. UV Light
UV light is short-wavelength, high-energy radiation capable of damaging DNA directly — the basis of photoageing and skin cancer risk. PBM operates at much longer wavelengths (typically 600–1000nm), carrying insufficient photon energy to damage DNA in this way. VITARA devices emit no UV component.
PBM vs. Infrared Heat Therapy
Infrared heat lamps and heating pads work thermally, by raising tissue temperature. PBM is dosed specifically to avoid a clinically significant temperature rise. You may feel mild, comfortable warmth during a session — but this is incidental, not the mechanism. The therapeutic pathway is photochemical, evidenced by cellular and biochemical changes recorded at non-heating doses.
Where PBM Is Used
Within medicine, PBM has an established evidence base for musculoskeletal pain — including neck pain, knee osteoarthritis, and chronic low back pain — and selected wound-healing indications. In sports medicine, it's been studied extensively for exercise performance, fatigue, and recovery. Within general wellness, PBM is increasingly used for skin quality and recovery, with sleep quality as an emerging area of interest.
