Where PBM’s evidence is strongest.

Musculoskeletal comfort — covering joints, muscles, and everyday movement — is the area where photobiomodulation’s clinical evidence is most robust, backed by some of the largest meta-analyses in the field.

What the Evidence Shows

A landmark meta-analysis published in The Lancet found low-level laser therapy produced a clinically meaningful reduction in chronic neck pain versus placebo. A separate meta-analysis found similarly favourable, though more moderate, effects for non-specific chronic low back pain. A more recent network meta-analysis across knee osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and shoulder disorders found clinically relevant pain reductions — with adherence to recommended dosage guidelines linked to more consistent outcomes.

A recurring theme in this research: dosing consistency matters. Studies following recommended parameters report more reliable outcomes than those using arbitrary protocols — which is exactly why correctly specified equipment and consistent protocols make a real difference.

Beyond Joint Pain: Muscle Comfort

PBM’s role in muscle comfort connects closely to its use in exercise recovery (see Exercise Recovery). Reduced markers of muscle damage and reduced delayed-onset soreness are among the most consistently reported findings in the literature, giving PBM a scientifically grounded place in supporting comfort after physical activity — not just after intense training, but in everyday movement and activity levels too.

Who This Is Relevant To

Many people managing joint discomfort, stiffness, or general muscular tension — whether from exercise, physiotherapy, ageing, or simply an active lifestyle — may find PBM a complementary, evidence-supported option. It’s not a substitute for medical management, but it offers a passive, well-evidenced addition to a movement- and comfort-aware routine.
